Mar Mattai monastery is a Syriac Orthodox monastery on Mount Alfaf in Nineveh Governorate, Iraq, founded in the 4th century AD. It is one of the region’s oldest surviving Christian monastic communities.

The monastery complex contains ancient churches, monastic cells and terraces that provide wide views across the surrounding Nineveh Plains. It also preserves a library and collections of Syriac manuscripts and religious objects of historical importance.

Established in the 4th century by the ascetic Mar Mattai, the monastery has remained an active center of Syriac Orthodox monastic life and scholarship through successive historical periods. It has served as a religious, cultural and sometimes defensive refuge for local Christian communities.
