Shanhai Pass
Building Great Wall pass where wall meets the sea
Where the Great Wall meets the Bohai Sea at Shanhaiguan-notable sections include Laolongtou (‘Old Dragon’s Head’)-showing coastal battlements and Ming-era fortifications. Visitors come for sea-front wall views and fortress museums.
Shanhai Pass (Shanhaiguan) is the historic eastern terminus of the Ming Great Wall in Hebei province, where the wall reaches the Bohai Sea and a fortified pass controlled coastal access.
The site includes the prominent seaside section known as Laolongtou or Old Dragon’s Head, where masonry fortifications project into the water, and a large gate-and-tower complex that formed a multi-layered defensive pass. Visitors commonly view the wall’s end meeting the sea and walk sections of the surviving ramparts and gate structures.
Major surviving works at Shanhai Pass date to the early Ming dynasty, when coastal fortifications were built and expanded to guard the northeastern approaches to the empire.
The pass sits on the coast of Hebei province at the point where the Peiho/Bohai coastline meets the Great Wall.
- 'First Pass Under Heaven': Often called the 'First Pass Under Heaven' in Chinese tradition, it forms the eastern terminus of the Ming Great Wall where the wall meets the sea.
- Ming-era fortifications: Major surviving structures at the site date to the early Ming dynasty; the pass functioned as a coastal military strongpoint.
What to See #
- Laolongtou (Old Dragon's Head): Laolongtou or "Old Dragon's Head" is the section of wall that projects into the Bohai Sea where the Great Wall reaches the waterline.
- Gate complex: The Shanhai Pass gate complex is a fortified Ming-era pass with multiple gates and towers that controlled access along the eastern frontier of China.
How to Get to Shanhai Pass #
Travel by rail from Beijing or other major Chinese cities to Qinhuangdao on high‑speed (G/D) or regular trains, then continue to Shanhaiguan (Shanhai Pass) by local train, bus or taxi. The pass lies east of Qinhuangdao (roughly 15-20 km from the city center); taxis and local buses run from Qinhuangdao and from Shanhaiguan railway/station areas directly to the historic gate.
Tips for Visiting Shanhai Pass #
- Visit Shanhai Pass (Shanhaiguan) early in the morning to beat the day-trip crowds from nearby cities and to get clearer views at Laolongtou (the 'Old Dragon's Head') where the Great Wall meets the sea.
- Make sure your ticket/entry includes both the main pass complex and the seaside Laolongtou area; many visitors only see the gate complex while missing the short walk down to the wall's dramatic seaside stretch.
- Allow time to walk the ramparts on either side of the main gate rather than only viewing from the plaza-those sections give a better sense of the fortress layout and are less crowded later in the morning.
Best Time to Visit Shanhai Pass #
Best in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and conditions are pleasant for walking and photography.
