Shaheed Minar

Shaheed Minar is a national monument in Dhaka that commemorates those killed during the 1952 Bengali Language Movement. The site is the focal point for remembrance of linguistic and cultural rights in Bangladesh.

The memorial is a central assemblage used for floral tribute and public gatherings; it is particularly crowded every 21 February when large processions and ceremonies are held. Small groups and individuals also visit year-round to leave wreaths and pay respects, and the site is commonly photographed as a symbol of Bangladesh’s language movement.

The first, improvised memorial was erected by students in February 1952 and was later replaced by a permanent monument; the present structure dates from the 1960s. Over the decades the site has been restored and maintained as the national site of remembrance for the 1952 martyrs.

The monument sits in central Dhaka close to the University of Dhaka and many government institutions, and is accessible on foot or by short taxi ride from major central districts.
