Serbia in May: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Vojvodina (Northern Plains)

By May the plains feel decisively spring-like: warmth returns, trees are in leaf, and fields of rapeseed or wheat add color outside the towns. Late-May thunderstorms can be sudden and energetic, sometimes producing local flooding on rural lanes; check forecasts if you’re driving between villages. The EXIT Festival crowd is still weeks away, so it’s a lovely moment to visit wineries around Sremski Karlovci without the peak-season bustle.

Belgrade & Šumadija (Central Lowlands)

May sees comfortable, often sunny days and the Šumadija countryside is at its most fragrant with fruit trees in bloom. Weekend traffic to nearby spas and wine routes increases, and outdoor terraces around Knez Mihailova bustle as locals take advantage of the weather. Nights remain cool enough for a jacket, and sudden thunderstorms are possible in the afternoons - plan flexible itineraries.

Western Highlands & Mountain Resorts (Zlatibor, Tara, Kopaonik)

May brings steady thawing: meadows on Zlatibor flower and forest streams run fast, while lingering snow may still cap the highest ridges. Trails become very muddy early in the month, limiting some hiking; by late May the landscape is green and much easier to traverse. Mountain resorts begin re-opening summer facilities; it’s an excellent time for lower-elevation walks and quiet nature photography.

Southern & Southeastern Serbia (Niš, Leskovac, Vranje)

By May the heat starts to build in the plains around Leskovac and Niš: sunny days are warm and the evenings balmy. Outdoor dining and long terrace evenings return, and the Udovicevo and surrounding waterfalls run full after spring rains. It’s a good window for visiting the well-known grilled-meat festivals in Leskovac - expect crowds and book ahead if you travel for a specific event.

Eastern Serbia & the Danube Gorge (Đerdap, Bor, Negotin)

Fine, warm days are common in May and the Eastern region begins to feel summery earlier than the highlands, making river cruises and fortress visits very pleasant. The flora on the cliff faces is green and explosive with spring growth, and countryside roads are passable for exploring villages like Tekija. Bring insect repellent by late May as mosquitoes appear near slow river arms and wetlands.
