Sentosa
Island Resort island with beaches, attractions, and theme parks
Sentosa island concentrates beaches, Universal Studios, an aquarium and resort hotels; families and day-trippers come for theme parks, cable-car access and beachfront dining.
Sentosa is a purpose-built resort island off southern Singapore that functions as an entertainment, leisure, and heritage precinct; it was developed from the 1970s and is one of the country’s primary tourist destinations. The island hosts theme parks, beaches, museums, hotels, and restored military heritage sites.
Major draws include Universal Studios Singapore and the integrated Resorts World Sentosa complex, the S.E.A. Aquarium, multiple sandy beaches such as Siloso and Palawan, and the historic Fort Siloso. Transport links onto the island include a cable car from Mount Faber, the Sentosa Express monorail from VivoCity, and road access via a causeway; many visitors combine several attractions in a single day.
Development began in the 1970s under a national plan to create a leisure island; infrastructure and attractions expanded through the 1990s and 2000s with large-scale investments culminating in Resorts World Sentosa and the opening of Universal Studios in 2010. Fort Siloso was conserved as part of the island’s heritage interpretation.
Geographically Sentosa sits just off Singapore’s southern coast, separated from the main island by a narrow channel and connected by several transport links. The island’s low, landscaped terrain contains reclaimed sections and built-up resort zones concentrated on its western and southern shores.
- Access options: Multiple access options include the Sentosa Express monorail, the Mount Faber cable car, vehicular causeway, and pedestrian Sentosa Boardwalk; a small admission fee or fare may apply depending on the entry point.
- Development focus: The island has been developed since the 1970s into a purpose-built resort complex with major attractions concentrated in the Resorts World Sentosa area on the southwest side.
