Senate Square (Saint Petersburg)

Senate Square is a central open space in Saint Petersburg, Russia, anchored by the famous Bronze Horseman equestrian statue of Peter the Great. The square sits among several major imperial-era buildings and is one of the city’s principal historic plazas.

The Bronze Horseman, unveiled in 1782 and sculpted by Étienne Falconet, dominates the square and is treated as an emblem of the city. The surrounding architecture includes the historic Senate and Synod building and wide approaches that together frame the monument.

The square became notable in modern Russian history as the setting of the Decembrist revolt in December 1825, when a group of military officers staged an uprising that was suppressed. The square and statue have since remained focal points for civic memory and tourism.

Senate Square sits on the south bank of the Neva River in central Saint Petersburg, close to St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the Admiralty. It is within easy walking distance of other downtown attractions and river-front promenades.
