Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey is a natural limestone formation in Alta Verapaz where the Cahabón River flows beneath a raised limestone bridge and a stepped series of turquoise pools sits above the river. The calcified bridge and pools extend for roughly 300 metres and are set within dense tropical forest.

The site is visited for its natural pools, swimming in clear water pools, a short hike to a panoramic lookout, and nearby cave activities around the village of Lanquín. The pools are layered terraces of travertine formed by mineral deposits from river water, producing striking blue-green pools of varying depth.

Semuc Champey formed through long-term karst processes and deposition of travertine over a limestone bed where the river flows underground and reappears beneath the natural bridge. The area has been a local landmark and visitor attraction for decades, popular among both domestic and international travelers.

Semuc Champey lies in a remote, forested valley of Alta Verapaz near the village of Lanquín. Access is by unpaved roads and short jungle trails from Lanquín; the general area is mountainous and covered by humid tropical forest.

• Best time to visit: Best viewing conditions are in the dry season when the pools are clearest; the main viewpoint involves a short but steep uphill trail from the pools area.
