Semberija
Tomb Fertile northeastern Bosnian plain and agricultural region
A fertile plain in northeastern Bosnia around Bijeljina and the Drina River, known for agriculture, river scenery and local fairs reflecting the region’s mixed traditions.
Semberija is a lowland agricultural region in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, located within Republika Srpska and traditionally centered on the town of Bijeljina. It is known chiefly for its fertile soils and mixed farmland.
The plain is dominated by fields, orchards and small settlements rather than large urban centres; transport and local markets in Bijeljina are the main service hubs. The landscape includes riverine wetlands and irrigation systems that support intensive agriculture.
The region developed over many centuries as an agricultural zone under changing administrations, including Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule, which influenced land use and settlement patterns. Its economy has remained largely rural with agriculture as the main activity.
Geographically Semberija lies in the far northeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina, close to the border with Serbia, and is drained by tributaries feeding the Sava and Drina river systems. Bijeljina is the principal town and local administrative centre.
