Seiganto-ji Temple
Temple Buddhist temple by Nachi Falls, part of pilgrimage
Perched beside Nachi Falls, Seiganto-ji offers a three-storied pagoda framed by the waterfall; pilgrims and hikers travel the Kumano Kodo here to visit shrines, photograph views and sample local seafood in nearby Nachikatsuura.
Seiganto-ji is a Buddhist temple complex located beside Nachi Falls on the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. It is closely associated with the nearby Shinto shrine and the Kumano pilgrimage tradition.
The site is noted for a red three-storied pagoda that sits on the slope below the temple, and for views that frame the pagoda with Nachi Falls in the background. The temple complex includes a main hall used for Buddhist worship and multiple smaller structures along the approach from the town.
Seiganto-ji grew as a religious site connected to the Kumano faith and has long been part of the syncretic Buddhist and Shinto traditions of the area. Over time the temple has been rebuilt and maintained; it remains an active place of worship and pilgrimage.
The temple stands adjacent to Nachi Falls in the town of Nachikatsuura on the Kii Peninsula. It is part of the broader Kumano region on the Pacific side of the peninsula and is accessed from the coastal town and nearby roads.
- UNESCO site: Part of the Kumano pilgrimage routes and included within the UNESCO listing "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range."
- Classic viewpoint: A classic viewpoint aligns the red three-storied pagoda in the foreground with Nachi Falls behind it, popular for photography especially in clear weather.
What to See #
- Main hall: The temple's main hall (hondō) is the primary worship building used for Buddhist services and ceremonies located on the temple compound overlooking the falls.
- Three-storied pagoda: The three-storied pagoda stands on the slope below the main complex and is a frequent photographic subject when framed against the waterfall.
- Nachi Falls: Nachi Falls sits immediately adjacent to the temple complex and is one of Japan's tallest single-drop waterfalls, visible from the temple grounds and nearby viewing points.
