Sarez Lake is a high-altitude lake in Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan region formed when a massive landslide blocked a mountain valley in 1911. The landslide created the natural Usoi Dam, which impounds the lake and is notable as one of the largest known natural landslide dams.
The lake is in a remote, mountainous area and is primarily of interest to geologists, hydrologists and hazard specialists because of the potential consequences of dam instability. There are no extensive tourist services; access requires prolonged overland travel or river routes and is commonly undertaken with specialist guides.
The lake and dam were created by the 1911 earthquake and subsequent landslide; since then the lake has remained impounded and scientists have monitored it for signs of instability and downstream risk. International and national efforts have studied mitigation and monitoring but the lake remains a concern for downstream communities.
Sarez lies in the Pamir Mountains of eastern Tajikistan within Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, high above regional river valleys and accessible only via long mountain routes from regional centres.

Tips for Visiting Sarez Lake #
- Plan any visit in the short summer window (roughly July-September) when mountain roads and river crossings are most passable; outside that season access is frequently blocked by snow or bad weather.
- Obtain the Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO) permit and arrange travel with an experienced Khorog-based operator-Sarez Lake is remote, reached by multi-day 4x4 routes that require local logistics and permissions.
- Acclimatize in Khorog before longer drives into higher valleys and expect long, rough overland days; services are extremely limited near the lake, so bring a detailed plan and confirm guides and vehicles in advance.
