São Tomé and Príncipe in April: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Northern São Tomé (São Tomé city and northern coast)

April tends toward some of the year’s wettest conditions in the north, with strong tropical showers and high humidity that makes the day feel warmer than the thermometer reads. Road surfaces can be slippery, and unpaved tracks toward beaches such as Praia das Conchas may become inaccessible after heavy rains-4x4s and local advice are useful. Expect short windows of bright sun between storms; this is a good month for busy markets and cultural life in town but less reliable for beach plans. Bring sturdy footwear and a rain jacket, and give yourself extra travel time if heading inland.

Central Highlands and Obô (Pico de São Tomé, Pico Cão Grande, forest interior)

April deepens the wet-season mood in the interior; trails become intensely green and rivers run high and fast. Summit attempts on Pico de São Tomé are less predictable as cloud and rain limit visibility and make the final slopes slippery. The forest canopy keeps daytime temperatures mild but damp, increasing the need for waterproof clothing and a sturdy walking pole. For wildlife photography, the dense foliage and flowing water create excellent opportunities when light breaks between storms.

Southern São Tomé (southern coast, Ilhéu das Rolas and nearby islets)

April often sees the southern coast in a strong wet-season pattern with long periods of rain interspersed with warm humid breaks. Ilhéu das Rolas is atmospheric when cloud-wrapped, but swimming and small-boat trips are less reliable; request up-to-date boat status the morning you plan to travel. The southern tip’s roças may be active with local agricultural work between rains, offering off‑beat cultural experiences if you’re flexible. Carry protective covers for luggage and camera gear.

Príncipe Island (Santo António, Sundy, Obo Reserve)

April continues a pattern of substantial rain and high humidity; low cloud frequently cloaks Pico do Príncipe and the Obo forest. Daytime humidity makes walks feel sweaty even when temperatures aren’t extreme; mornings sometimes offer clearer windows ideal for short birding trips. Boat transfers remain weather-dependent, so plan for indoor activities-resort-based wildlife talks or village visits-if sea conditions are unsettled. Waterproof bags and protective cases for equipment are highly recommended.
