Santa Prassede is an early medieval basilica in Rome’s Esquilino quarter, noted for its exceptional Byzantine-style mosaics. The church dates back to the early 9th century in its present form and preserves important examples of early medieval decoration.

Richly tessellated mosaics in the chapel area and preserved medieval fabric that make the interior a concentrated display of 9th-century mosaic art. The church is compact but highly regarded for the quality and preservation of its decorative scheme.

The basilica was rebuilt and decorated in the early 9th century under papal patronage on the site of an earlier Christian church. Its mosaics and relics reflect its role as a papal foundation and place of local devotion across the Middle Ages.

Santa Prassede stands a short walk from the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in central Rome’s Esquilino district, making it accessible on a walking circuit of Rome’s major churches and historic sites.
