Santa Maria sopra Minerva Church

Santa Maria sopra Minerva is a Dominican church in central Rome notable for its Gothic interior and location above the ruins of an ancient temple to Minerva. It stands near the Pantheon and is one of the city’s principal medieval churches.

The church’s Gothic proportions and single nave with ribbed vaulting are uncommon in Rome and contain important paintings, funerary monuments and a notable statue by Michelangelo in a side chapel. The interior chapels and tombs house works spanning the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Erected in the medieval period on top of an earlier Roman temple site, the church became the main Dominican foundation in Rome and accumulated significant art and tombs over the centuries. It has been maintained as an active parish and a repository of important ecclesiastical art.

Situated in the historic centre of Rome just southeast of the Pantheon, the church lies within easy walking distance of many central monuments and piazzas.
