Coatepeque is a large crater lake in the Santa Ana Department of El Salvador, set within a volcanic caldera. It is one of the countrys best-known freshwater lakes and a popular regional recreation area.
The shoreline offers beaches, lakeside restaurants and small marinas for boat trips and fishing. Several viewpoints along the caldera rim provide wide views over the water and surrounding farmland.
The lake occupies a volcanic caldera formed by past eruptions; the surrounding landscape is of volcanic origin. Over time the site has become a recreational and tourist area with private and public facilities along the shore.
The lake sits in western El Salvador within the department of Santa Ana, close to the town of Coatepeque and within driving distance of the city of Santa Ana. The setting is a low volcanic mountain landscape with agricultural plains beyond the caldera rim.
