Sanmenxia Dam

Sanmenxia Dam is a large river dam on the Yellow River near the city of Sanmenxia in western Henan province, China; construction was carried out in the late 1950s and the main works were completed by 1960.

The project was a major national hydraulic engineering scheme completed in the early years of the People’s Republic of China with technical assistance from Soviet engineers; after initial filling the reservoir experienced heavy sedimentation that required operational changes and further engineering responses in subsequent decades.

The dam sits across the Yellow River close to the city of Sanmenxia in western Henan province, on the lower reaches of the Loess Plateau where the river cuts across the plateau margin.

• Sedimentation issues: The dam has been notable for sedimentation problems in the reservoir; major works and operational changes were implemented after initial filling to manage silt deposition.
• Viewing points: Best viewpoints are from the riverbanks and roadways on either side of the Yellow River near the city of Sanmenxia, where the dam and reservoir are visible across the valley.

What to See #

• Sanmenxia Reservoir / Hydropower plant: The dam impounds the Yellow River to form the Sanmenxia Reservoir and is associated with a hydroelectric power station immediately downstream of the dam structure.
