Hukou Pubu Waterfall
Dramatic Yellow River waterfall on Shaanxi–Shanxi border
At the Yellow River's Hukou Waterfall, platforms bring visitors close to the river's narrow, forceful drop; people come for geology, dramatic seasonal flows and photographic viewpoints.
Hukou Pubu (Hukou Waterfall) is the dramatic point where the Yellow River narrows into a rocky gorge on the border between Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces, producing a powerful, yellow-tinted cascade. It is one of the most famous freshwater falls on the Yellow River and a major regional tourist attraction.
The waterfall forms where the river is squeezed through a narrow channel and plunges approximately 15-20 metres, with the visible width varying by season and flow from a few tens of metres up to wider spans in flood. Multiple viewing platforms on both banks give close vantage points of the torrent and churning rapids.
The feature is entirely natural; there is no major built structure at the fall itself, though visitor facilities and roads developed on both provincial sides accommodate tourists. The waterfall has been a noted scenic site in China for centuries and is often visited on regional sightseeing routes.
Hukou sits on the middle reaches of the Yellow River, roughly on the border between Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces. The nearest larger cities with road links are Yuncheng (Shanxi) and Xi’an further to the east; access is generally by road and local tourist services from nearby towns.
- Best time to visit: Spectacle is strongest in the high-water season after rains or during spring thaw when the river volume and yellow silt intensify the torrent.
- Safety note: Safety barriers are present but the river is powerful; follow marked paths and local guidance when approaching viewing points.
What to See#
- Viewing platforms: Viewing platforms and steps on both banks of the Yellow River allow close observation of the fall and the narrow rock throat where the river is forced through the canyon.
- Panorama roads and lookouts: A riverside panorama road and lookout areas on the Shaanxi and Shanxi sides provide different perspectives and seasonal views of the torrent.
Tips for Visiting Hukou Pubu#
- Plan your visit for spring or shortly after heavy rains when the Yellow River's flow is strongest - that's when Hukou's dramatic 'throat' of water is most impressive.
- View the falls from both sides of the river if you can: one bank gives a close, spray-soaked perspective while the opposite bank offers a wider panoramic composition of the gorge and surrounding landscape.
- Go on a weekday morning to avoid the busiest tourist periods; the onsite viewing platforms are much quieter early in the day, which also improves photo opportunities and comfort.
Best Time to Visit Hukou Pubu#
For the most dramatic water flow visit in the summer rainy season, but late spring offers a good balance of weather and accessibility.
