Hua Shan (Mount Hua) is a steep, rocky mountain in Shaanxi province, China, and one of the country’s Five Great Mountains. Its highest summit, the South Peak, reaches 2,154 metres.

The mountain is famous for a network of narrow ridgeline trails, paved stone stairways and cliffside sections with fixed chains and ladders that lead between five main peaks. Popular objectives include the North Peak approaches, the exposed plank and chain paths near the summits, and panoramic overlooks that provide views down steep valleys.

Hua Shan has been a site of religious and cultural importance for centuries, with Taoist temples, pavilions and hermitages built on its slopes and at summits. Pilgrimage routes and temple complexes were established in early medieval times and the mountain continued to be developed through later dynasties.

The mountain lies near the city of Huayin in Shaanxi province, approximately east of Xi’an by road. Trails approach from valley towns and a cable car provides access to higher trailheads for visitors.

  • Trail difficulty: Steep, exposed trails and fixed chains are common; some routes are short but very steep and require sure-footedness and head for heights.
  • Cable car access: Cable cars operate to some peaks, providing rapid ascent to higher trailheads and reducing approach time for day visitors.

  • East, West and Middle Peaks: East, West and Middle Peaks - steep, exposed ridges and routes that attract hikers and climbers; the East Peak is known for cliffside trails.
