The Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel is a medieval pilgrimage complex on the Gargano promontory in Apulia, southern Italy, built around a natural cave that became the shrine’s focal point. The site has been a centre of devotion to Saint Michael since late antiquity and the early medieval period.

The sanctuary comprises the grotto chapel at the core and a later-built church complex with chapels and facilities for pilgrims, reflecting continuous use over many centuries. It has been an important destination on pilgrimage routes in southern Italy and retains medieval fabric alongside later additions.

The sanctuary sits on the slopes of Monte Gargano in the province of Foggia, occupying a prominent rocky position above the surrounding coastal plain of Apulia.

Monte Sant’Angelo is best reached from Foggia (about 60-80 km away) by regional bus or car on the SS89 and SP routes. The nearest major rail hub is Foggia; from there regular buses or hired transfers go up to Monte Sant’Angelo. From the town square it is a short but steep walk to the sanctuary.

• Plan to visit on a clear day-the view from the sanctuary across the Gargano plain is part of the experience.
• If possible, attend the evening vespers; the sanctuary's acoustics and candlelight transform the cave chapel.
• Wear sturdy shoes-the long pilgrimage stairways are historic and can be uneven.
