Sanctuary of Asclepius, Epidaurus

The Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus is an extensive ancient healing complex on the northeastern Peloponnese, centered on the cult of Asclepius. It combines monumental religious architecture, medical facilities, and recreational buildings, making it one of the foremost healing sanctuaries of the Greek world.

The site’s most visited feature is the large 4th-century BCE theatre, noted for its outstanding acoustics and seating for approximately 13,000 to 14,000 spectators; the sanctuary also includes the Tholos and the Abaton, where supplicants sought healing. Visitors explore ruined temples, stoas, and excavation finds in situ and in the local museum.

Historically the sanctuary developed from the Archaic into the Classical period as a center for ritual healing; pilgrims came from across the Greek world to undergo rituals and incubation believed to produce cures. The site has been the subject of systematic archaeological investigation since the 19th century and is managed as a major cultural heritage site.

Geographically the sanctuary sits near the modern town of Epidavros (Epidaurus) on the Saronic Gulf in the Argolid region of the Peloponnese, easily reached from coastal routes and regional centers.

The Sanctuary of Asclepius is near the modern village of Epidaurus (Palaia Epidaurus). From Athens, drive about 2-2.5 hours along the coastal National Road (E65/EO91) toward Nafplio and follow signs to Epidaurus; parking is available near the archaeological site. Regional buses run from Nafplio and Korinthos to Palea Epidaurus-check local timetables in advance. From the small Epidaurus port (3-5 km), it’s a 20-30 minute walk up to the site.

• Arrive early in high summer - the archaeological site opens at first light and the theatre is coolest before mid-morning sun.
• Walk the long sacred way from the modern Epidaurus parking area rather than jumping to the theatre; the hilltop views and ruined marble fragments reward the extra ten minutes.
• Bring earplugs if attending a crowded performance - the ancient acoustics are miraculous, but modern audiences can be loud.
• Visit the small Archaeological Museum of Epidaurus next to the site; it contains votive offerings and the best context for the sanctuary.
