Sanam Luang is a historic public square and royal field in central Bangkok, immediately adjacent to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. It has served as a ceremonial open space for the Thai monarchy and state occasions since the founding of the Rattanakosin capital in 1782.
The large rectangular lawn and paved promenades are used for royal ceremonies, state funerals, festivals and public events, while at other times locals use it for exercise and informal gatherings. The field is framed by monuments and is closely flanked by Thammasat University and other civic buildings.
Designated as a royal field during the early Rattanakosin period, the site has long been used for cremation rites, public rites and large-scale ceremonies and has been adapted for modern civic events. Its role has continued as Bangkok’s primary ceremonial open space on Rattanakosin Island.
Sanam Luang sits on Rattanakosin Island in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok, directly in front of the Grand Palace and within easy walking distance of riverside temples and government offices.
