San José Mogote is a major Formative-period archaeological site in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, and an important early center in the development of Zapotec culture. Archaeological remains indicate long-term occupation with a visible civic core and surrounding residential areas.
Prominent on-site features include a raised central plaza and mound complex used for public and ceremonial functions, along with carved stone monuments and evidence of craft production. Surface and excavated architecture document a transition from village-scale occupation to larger community organization.
The site was populated and developed during the Formative period, functioning as a regional center before other major Zapotec centers rose in prominence. Excavations in the twentieth century revealed its importance for understanding early social hierarchy and regional interaction in Oaxaca.
San José Mogote lies in the southern part of the Valley of Oaxaca in the state of Oaxaca; it is inland from the modern city of Oaxaca de Juárez and situated among agricultural land that has preserved visible archaeological mounds and features.
