San Jacinto Monument

The San Jacinto Monument is a towering column-style memorial at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site near Houston, Texas, commemorating the Battle of San Jacinto of 1836. It stands 567.31 feet (173 metres) tall and was completed in 1939.

The monument contains an observation level offering panoramic views over the battleground and the Houston Ship Channel, and an on-site museum displays artifacts and a large diorama that interpret the battle and Texas’s independence. The structure was built as a state memorial and houses exhibits dedicated to the conflict.

The memorial was erected to honor the decisive battle fought on April 21, 1836, which led to Texas’s independence from Mexico, and subsequent museum development has provided historical interpretation for visitors. The site has been managed as a state historic site and tourist destination since the monument’s completion.

The complex lies in the San Jacinto area near La Porte and Deer Park, approximately 20 kilometres east of downtown Houston, adjacent to the Houston Ship Channel and accessible by road from the greater Houston area.
