Upolu - Apia & North Coast

May brings a noticeably drier rhythm to Apia and the north coast as the southeast trade winds strengthen; humidity eases and mornings are fresher. Sea conditions generally calm, making trips to Palolo Deep and short island cruises more reliable; surf on the north side is modest and less consistent. This is a comfortable month for urban exploring, open-air markets, and walking the Apia waterfront - pack light layers for breezy evenings.

Upolu - South Coast & Aleipata (Lalomanu, To-Sua)

The south coast relaxes noticeably by May: humidity eases, trade winds pick up and Lalomanu becomes reliably good for beach days and snorkeling in the mornings. To-Sua’s ladder and pool are pleasant before midday heat; late afternoons bring cooling breezes. This is a comfortable time to book beachfront fales and small island tours - pack reef shoes and a light windlayer for evenings.

Upolu - Interior Highlands and River Valleys

May moderates to warm, humid mornings and much drier afternoons in the highlands as the southeast trades take hold; stream levels drop to safer levels and trails firm up. This is one of the best months for inland hikes and village visits around places such as the Papase’ea sliding rocks area and inland rivers. Bring layered clothing for temperature swings and sturdy footwear for rocky, rooty paths.

Savai’i - Islandwide (Salelologa, Afu Aau, Alofaaga Blowholes)

May ushers in the drier season, with Savai’i enjoying clearer skies, milder humidity and steadier seas - the island comes into its most visitor-friendly period. Salelologa market is lively, and boat-based activities run more reliably; snorkeling windows improve. It’s an excellent time for hiking on Mount Silisili’s lower trails and exploring crater areas; bring sun protection and a light windlayer for exposed ridgelines.

Manono & Apolima - Small Outer Islets

May’s drier weather brings markedly calmer seas and more reliable boat links to Upolu; these islets become pleasurable short-stay destinations with fewer heavy showers. The trade winds keep humidity lower and provide pleasant breezes when lounging on small beaches.
