Sambor Prei Kuk
Archaeological Site Pre-Angkorian temple complex amid forest
Sambor Prei Kuk near Kampong Thom contains pre‑Angkorian brick temples from the Chenla period, with simple towers and carved lintels. Archaeology tours and quiet walks bring most visitors.
Sambor Prei Kuk is a pre-Angkorian archaeological complex in Kampong Thom province, Cambodia, that served as the capital of the Chenla kingdom (Isanapura) in the 7th century. It is an important example of early Khmer brick temple architecture and decorative carving.
The site comprises several groups of brick sanctuaries and towers set in a woodland landscape, with carved lintels, false doors and sculpted reliefs. Visitors typically walk between compact temple clusters and examine masonry and decorative stonework rather than large-scale monument complexes.
Sambor Prei Kuk was developed as the royal city of Isanapura in the 7th century during the Chenla period. The surviving brick towers and sanctuaries reflect the religious and political center established at that time and were later abandoned before the rise of the Angkorian capitals.
The complex sits in central Cambodia’s lowlands within Kampong Thom province, north of the Tonle Sap basin. The site is reached by road from provincial towns and lies inland from Cambodia’s central floodplain.
- Timing: Best visited in the dry season (roughly November to February) when paths are easier and carvings are clearer.
- Crowds: Much less crowded than the Angkor sites, allowing closer inspection of brickwork and lintel carvings without large tour groups.
