The Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad is a major museum founded on the private collections of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III and opened to the public in the early 1950s. It houses a broad, cross-cultural assemblage of sculptures, paintings, furniture, textiles and arms from Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Galleries are organized by theme and region and include collections of European paintings, Islamic art, South Asian sculpture, decorative furniture and an extensive arms and armour gallery. The museum’s displays reflect the tastes of a single prominent collector and the breadth of acquisitions amassed over decades.

The collection was transferred from a private estate into a public institution in the mid-20th century and the museum building and galleries have been expanded to accommodate large numbers of objects and visitors. Salar Jung Museum is located on the southern side of the Musi River in central Hyderabad (the museum address is on Afzal Gunj / Darulshifa area). It’s reachable by city buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws; the nearest major railway station is Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally), approximately 1.5-2 km away (roughly a 20-30 minute walk or a short taxi/auto ride). By car the museum is about 25-30 km from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (drive time varies with traffic).

• Arrive early on a weekday to see the most famous pieces, like the veiled sculptures and the clock room, before the galleries fill with school groups and tour buses.
• Use the main entrance on Salar Jung Road and head first to the Sculpture and European art sections; those galleries often become congested later in the day while the upper floors can be quieter.
