Chowmahalla Palace Palace

Chowmahalla Palace is a historic palace complex in the old city of Hyderabad, Telangana, noted as the former ceremonial seat of the Nizams. The name means “four palaces” and the site is significant for its royal architecture and state rooms.

The complex’s principal highlight is the large ceremonial hall and interconnected courtyards, including formal audience spaces and royal apartments. Architectural highlights include ornate plasterwork, wooden carved doors, and expansive paved courtyards that frame the main buildings.

Construction and enlargement took place under the Asaf Jahi dynasty across the 18th and 19th centuries, when successive Nizams commissioned additions and ornate interiors. Over the 20th and 21st centuries the complex has undergone phased restoration to conserve interiors and facades and to open parts to the public as a museum.

The palace sits within Hyderabad’s historic core in Telangana, India, and is part of the city’s cluster of 18th- and 19th-century civic and royal monuments.

• Palace courtyards: A series of formal courtyards and subsidiary halls arranged around the main palaces, combining Persianate and European decorative influences and forming the visible ‘four palaces’ layout.

• Aim to arrive shortly after opening to avoid the midday tour groups that concentrate around the Khilwat (durbar) hall and the courtyards; mornings are also cooler and more comfortable for exploring the complex.
• Buy tickets online or at the palace counter to skip the queue and time your visit to include the vintage car display and the jewellery/treasure rooms, which are often overlooked by visitors who only view the main halls.
• Combine a visit with a short walk to Charminar and the Laad Bazaar nearby-many visitors miss how conveniently the palace fits into a single walking loop of the old city.
