Saint Sophia Cathedral

Saint Sophia Cathedral in Veliky Novgorod is a mid-11th-century stone cathedral and a principal monument of medieval Russian architecture. It stands within the Novgorod Kremlin and is among the oldest surviving churches in Russia.

The cathedral’s exterior is marked by a compact, fortress-like form topped by five domes; its plan and massing are characteristic of early Russian ecclesiastical design. Inside, visitors can see extensive medieval frescoes, icons and historic liturgical furnishings that illustrate Novgorod’s role as a medieval religious center.

Built in the mid-11th century under the patronage of Novgorod’s rulers, the cathedral served as the spiritual and civic heart of the Novgorod Republic. Over centuries it has been repaired and conserved several times but retains core elements from its original medieval fabric.

The cathedral sits in the Kremlin (Detinets) of Veliky Novgorod on the banks of the Volkhov River, within the city’s historic center.
