Saint John's Island
Island Leisure island with beaches and marine park
A short ferry from Singapore, Saint John’s Island offers sandy shores, picnic areas and sheltered coves; day-trippers come for swimming, snorkeling, and camping on a small, accessible island.
Saint John’s Island is a small island south of mainland Singapore that has served diverse roles including quarantine station and recreation area. It is part of Singapore’s Southern Islands group and is managed for public recreation and conservation.
The island offers beaches, picnic lawns and short walking paths as its main visitor attractions, together with interpretive signs about the island’s historical uses. It is often combined with visits to nearby Lazarus and Kusu Islands.
Historically the island was used as a quarantine facility and later for other administrative purposes; many of the quarantine-era buildings no longer function but are referenced in on-site interpretation. The island’s role has shifted to recreation and conservation in recent decades.
Saint John’s Island lies off Singapore’s southern coast and is reached by public ferry from Marina South Pier; it sits near Lazarus and Kusu Islands in Singapore’s southern archipelago.
- Ferry access: Regular public ferries connect the island with Marina South Pier on Singapore's main island; crossings typically take under 20 minutes from the pier when scheduled services run.
- Visitor facilities: Visitors should bring water and sun protection and expect basic on-island facilities; there are no large commercial services on the island.
What to See #
- Park and beaches: Low-key picnic areas and short coastal trails occupy the island's interior and shoreline; small beaches and shaded lawns are the main visitor facilities.
- Historical sites: The island has historical buildings and remnants of its former use as a quarantine station; signage explains the island's past roles in public health and penal administration.
How to Get to Saint John's Island #
Saint John’s Island is reached by ferry from Marina South Pier in Singapore. Take the MRT to Marina South Pier station (NS28 on the North-South Line) or other central routes to Marina South, then walk to the pier and board the scheduled ferry to the island (the pier and ferry departure point are adjacent). Check the island ferry operator’s timetable for sailings and return times.
Tips for Visiting Saint John's Island #
- Take the first public ferry from Marina South Pier to beat midday crowds and the heat - early arrivals also get calmer beaches and better picnic spots on the island.
- Avoid weekends and public holidays if you want a quieter visit; weekends are when most local families come, especially in the afternoon.
- Walk the short trails toward the old quarantine station ruins and shoreline; many visitors stay only on the central beach and miss the island's historical sites and quieter coves.
