Sabil-kuttab of Mustafa Shurbagi Mustahfizan

Sabil-kuttab of Mustafa Shurbagi Mustahfizan is an Ottoman-period sabil-kuttab in Historic Cairo, a small public water dispensary with an attached elementary Qur’anic school dating broadly to the 18th-19th century period of Cairo’s Islamic urban fabric.

The structure presents the typical two-level arrangement - a street-level sabil window where water was given out and an upper kuttab room with characteristic wooden screens or windows. Exterior surfaces commonly display carved stone, marble panels and calligraphic elements that identify the donor and charitable purpose. The building is compact and intended to be read as part of the streetscape rather than a large complex.

Like other sabil-kuttabs in Cairo, it was founded by a private patron as a waqf - a charitable endowment - to provide water and elementary religious instruction. Over time these structures remained community landmarks and several have undergone conservation or restoration to stabilize masonry and decorative elements.

The sabil-kuttab sits within the al-Gamaleya area of Historic Cairo, not far from al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street and the Khan al-Khalili market, in the dense medieval core of the city.
