Sabil-kuttab of Abbas Agha is a historic sabil-kuttab in Cairo Governorate, Egypt. It is an example of the combined public fountain and Qur’anic primary school building type common in Cairo’s urban fabric.
On arrival you will notice a compact two-storey composition with a street-facing water outlet below and a small teaching room above. Decorative elements typical to this building type include a carved or gridded opening at street level, stone or marble finishes around the fountain, and an upper window or mashrabiya for the kuttab.
Named for its benefactor, the structure was endowed to provide both potable water and basic Qur’anic instruction to neighborhood children; such endowments were commonly established as waqf by private patrons. Maintenance and operation were traditionally tied to the founder’s charitable trust.
