Sabil-kuttab of Umm ‘Abbas is a small Ottoman-era sabil-kuttab in Historic Cairo, part of the city’s ensemble of charitable street monuments dating largely from the 18th and 19th centuries.

It conforms to the characteristic plan with a street-level sabil window and an upper kuttab room for teaching, and typically features carved facade elements, inscription panels and wooden screened openings. The building’s modest footprint focuses interest on the decorated exterior rather than spacious interiors. These features reflect local building practices and the charitable intent of the patron.

Established as a waqf to provide water and basic religious instruction, the sabil-kuttab type played a persistent role in community life and many examples have undergone conservation to stabilize stonework and woodwork.

Located in the al-Gamaleya district of Historic Cairo, it lies close to al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street and the adjacent traditional market areas.

• Ask to be shown any remaining interior tiles or panels; local residents often know which doorways hide original features.
