Saaremaa
Island Estonia's largest island featuring windmills and medieval towns
Estonia’s largest island, Saaremaa brings visitors to Kuressaare’s medieval castle and spa town, traditional windmills, limestone shores and quiet coastal nature used for birdwatching and cycling.
Saaremaa is Estonia’s largest island, located in the Baltic Sea and known for its rural landscapes, well-preserved medieval architecture and geological features such as the Kaali meteorite craters. The island has long been a cultural and economic centre in western Estonia.
Principal attractions include Kuressaare Castle, a 14th-century episcopal fortress on the harbour that now houses a museum, and the Kaali craters, a cluster of impact sites visited for their geological interest. Saaremaa also features traditional windmills, coastal meadows and small fishing villages, and it is used for birdwatching, cycling and local festivals.
Historically the island was contested between Teutonic, Danish and Swedish powers and later integrated into the modern Estonian state; many historic buildings and rural traditions reflect this layered past. The island developed small-scale agriculture, seafaring and services for resident communities.
Saaremaa lies off Estonia’s west coast in the Baltic Sea, separated from the mainland by straits and smaller islands such as Hiiumaa, and is reached by ferry services from the Estonian mainland and seasonal flights.
