Kuressaare Castle is a medieval episcopal fortress on the island of Saaremaa in western Estonia, with origins in the 14th century. It is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Baltic region and now functions as a museum complex.

The castle’s defensive walls, inner courtyard and towers are open to visitors and the site includes exhibition spaces presenting regional archaeology, history and culture. The battlements and towers provide accessible viewpoints over the town of Kuressaare and the surrounding harbour.

Built as a stronghold and residence for the bishops of the region during the medieval period, the fortress passed through various rulers over centuries including periods of Swedish and Russian control before 20th-century restoration. Conservation and museum development in the 20th and 21st centuries have maintained the castle’s structural integrity and public uses.

The castle stands in the town of Kuressaare on the eastern shore of Saaremaa island in the Baltic Sea, adjacent to the town harbour. It is the principal historic site in Kuressaare and the focal point of the island’s historic centre, within ferry and road distance of mainland Estonia.

How to Get to Kuressaare Castle

Kuressaare Castle sits in the centre of Kuressaare on Saaremaa island. From mainland Estonia take the Virtsu-Kuivastu ferry (Muhu) and then drive across Muhu to Saaremaa following the well‑signed road (national road connecting Kuivastu to Kuressaare). From Kuressaare bus station the castle is in town centre - roughly a 5-10 minute walk (about 400-600 m).

Tips for Visiting Kuressaare Castle

Arrive early or late in the afternoon to avoid midday crowds and to get better photographic light on the castle's keep and moat.
Buy a combined ticket at the museum/ticket office and start with the castle museum: many visitors only circle the outer walls and miss the exhibits on medieval Saaremaa life and ship displays inside.
Climb the castle tower for the best views over Kuressaare and the harbour; check seasonal opening hours in advance since tower access can be limited outside high season.
