Saadian Tombs

The Saadian Tombs are a 16th century royal necropolis in the Kasbah district of Marrakech, associated with the Saadian dynasty and sealed until the early 20th century. The complex is noted for its elaborate decorative work and concentrated funerary chambers.

Small formal courtyards lead to vaulted mausoleum rooms displaying polychrome zellij tiles, carved stucco and painted cedar ceilings. The largest interior is the Chamber often called the Hall of the Twelve Columns, while other rooms hold family tombs arranged around a central courtyard with orange trees.

Constructed during the Saadian period in the 16th century, the site served as the royal burial place for members of that dynasty, including figures of the late 1500s. It was sealed off and largely forgotten until French-era excavations cleared and restored the complex in 1917.

Located in Marrakech’s historic Kasbah quarter, the tombs sit near the El Badi Palace and the old city walls, within the medina a short walk from other major monuments and souks.
