Why Visit Rung?#
Set amid rice paddies in Tboung Khmum province, Rung offers a peek at rural Khmer life centered on lively local markets and riverside pagodas. The town is a place for tasting classic Cambodian dishes such as fish amok and grilled freshwater fish, and for watching daily life along the Mekong’s tributaries. How to Get to Rung#
Rung is a small town in eastern Cambodia; most visitors arrive via Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) and continue by road. There are no major commercial airports in Tboung Khmum province, so expect a final leg by taxi, minivan, or provincial bus.
Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH): Phnom Penh is the nearest major international airport serving Cambodia. From PNH you can take a taxi or ride-hailing service to Tboung Khmum/Tboung Khmum-area towns; expect a 1.5-3 hour drive depending on exact location and traffic - typical taxi/ride-hail fares range roughly USD 25-60 for private cars.
Siem Reap International Airport (REP): Siem Reap is farther away but sometimes used by international visitors; road transfers to eastern provinces are long (4+ hours) and more expensive, so Siem Reap is only practical if combined with other stops in northwest Cambodia.
Bus: Interprovincial buses and minivans run from Phnom Penh’s bus stations to towns across eastern Cambodia (central Phnom Penh stations / Sorya Bus Terminal / local minivan departure points). Travel times to towns in Tboung Khmum province are typically 1.5-3 hours; fares are usually in the USD 2-8 range depending on vehicle and comfort.
Train: Cambodia’s passenger rail network is limited and intermittent outside main corridors; regular, reliable passenger rail service to Tboung Khmum/Tboung Khmum-area towns is not currently a dependable option, so bus or road transfer is recommended.
How to Get Around Rung#
Rung is best reached and left by road. International visitors typically fly to Phnom Penh and complete the journey by taxi, private transfer or interprovincial bus; within town, short trips are usually on foot or by moto-taxi.
- Taxi / Ride-hail (USD 25-60) - Taxis and ride-hailing (PassApp/Grab in Phnom Penh when available) are the fastest door-to-door option from Phnom Penh. They’re more comfortable and direct than buses but cost significantly more; expect roughly USD 25-60 depending on distance, time and vehicle type, and allow 1.5-3 hours.
- Interprovincial bus / Minivan (USD 2-8) - Local bus companies and minivans run scheduled and ad-hoc services between Phnom Penh and towns in eastern provinces. They’re the budget option (cheap fares), but timetables and comfort levels vary - bring water and be prepared for frequent stops. Travel times commonly 1.5-3 hours.
- Private car / Transfer (USD 40-100) - Private transfers or hire-with-driver give flexibility (useful if arriving late or with luggage). Rates are higher than taxis but negotiable; useful for direct trips to small villages where public buses don’t stop. Travel time similar to taxi depending on route.
- Motorbike taxi (USD 0.50-5) - For short hops inside towns and between nearby villages, motorcycle taxis are common and cheap. Use local negotiation; carry small change and helmet if possible. Not recommended for long highway journeys with luggage.
- Walking - Walking is the primary way to get around within small towns and villages; distances are short but sidewalks and lighting may be limited after dark. Keep valuables secure and plan daylight walks where possible.
