Rumelihisarı is a medieval Ottoman fortress on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey, built to command the strait immediately before the 1453 conquest of Constantinople. It is a compact stone fortification of towers, curtain walls and inner courts sitting on a promontory above the water.
The fortress contains multiple large towers and interlinking walls designed to control shipping and provide artillery coverage of the Bosphorus narrows. It is a well-preserved example of rapid medieval military construction and today functions as a historic site with exhibitions and seasonal cultural programming.
Ordered by Sultan Mehmed II, the fortress was constructed in 1452 as part of preparations for the Ottoman siege of Constantinople; it complemented a contemporary fortress built on the Asian side to control the strait. Over subsequent centuries the site has seen repairs, changing military roles and eventual preservation as a monument.
Rumelihisarı sits on the European bank of the Bosphorus in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul, just north of the city’s historical peninsula and beneath the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge corridor. The site is easily reached from central Istanbul by road and public transport.
