Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge is a suspension bridge carrying road traffic across the Bosphorus in Istanbul, linking the European and Asian sides of the city. It is commonly referred to as the Second Bosphorus Bridge and was completed in the late 1980s to improve cross-strait traffic capacity.

The bridge forms part of the city’s O-2 motorway and carries multiple lanes of vehicular traffic in both directions. It sits north of the older Bosphorus Bridge and is a key piece of Istanbul’s road network, handling heavy commuter and intercity flows rather than pedestrian traffic.

Designed and constructed as a long-span suspension crossing, the bridge shortened travel times across the strait and helped redistribute traffic across northern connections. It remains one of several Bosphorus crossings that link Europe and Asia within the metropolitan area.

Geographically the bridge spans the Bosphorus at a point north of the historical city centre and south of the Black Sea entrance; it connects the European side to the Asian side across the strait within greater Istanbul.

It is reached by road via Istanbul’s TEM/O‑2 corridor on both the European and Asian sides; from central Istanbul (Taksim/Sultanahmet area) driving distance is typically 20-30 km depending on route and traffic. The bridge is used by intercity and city buses and by motorway traffic; note there is no pedestrian access on the bridge. Use the TEM/O‑2 motorway approaches and follow signs for the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Köprüsü.

• You cannot walk across the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge-there is no pedestrian access-so plan to photograph or view it from riverside neighborhoods or aboard a Bosphorus ferry for the best angles.
• Avoid driving across during weekday peak hours (roughly 07:00-09:30 and 16:00-19:00) when Istanbul's commuter traffic on the bridge is at its worst; if you need to cross by vehicle, travel outside those windows.
• For scenic views and photos of the bridge, use ferries or shore viewpoints on both sides of the Bosphorus (for example Asian‑side hills or European riverside promenades) rather than attempting to access the bridge itself.
