Rudkhan Castle (also spelled Roodkhan or Roudkhan) is a medieval fortress in Gilan province in northern Iran, set high in densely wooded hills. It is a stone castle with concentric defensive works and is one of the best-preserved hill castles in the region.
The site comprises an upper citadel and extensive outer walls that run along the ridge, with numerous towers and gateways; the visible defensive walls measure over 1,500 metres and include some 40-plus towers. Hikers approach through a wooded trail and ascend a series of steps to reach the castle terraces and viewpoints.
The fortress is generally associated with medieval construction and reconstruction during the Seljuk period and later, and it functioned as a defensive stronghold overlooking the surrounding valley. Over time the structure fell into ruin and was partially restored in modern conservation efforts.
Rudkhan Castle is located inland in Gilan province, near the town of Fuman and set within the Caspian Hyrcanian forest belt of northern Iran.

How to Get to Rudkhan Castle #
Rudkhan Castle is reached by road from the nearby towns in Gilan province-most visitors drive from Fuman or from Rasht. From Rasht expect roughly a 30-60 minute drive depending on route (tens of kilometres) to the Fuman area; from the local parking area a marked uphill path and wooden stairways lead to the fortress and typically require a 20-40 minute walk (a steady climb of about one to two kilometres from the main car park).
Tips for Visiting Rudkhan Castle #
- Allow at least 1.5-2 hours for the uphill stone-step approach through the forest; the trail is long, steep and can be slippery after rain, so factor time for a steady climb and descent.
- Go early in the day to avoid mid-day heat and to have the fortress largely to yourself - cloud cover from the Caspian-facing slopes increases later in the afternoon.
- Buy tickets and check opening times at the small ticket office in the valley before you start the climb and ask about guided options if you want historical context; services at the site are minimal.
