Ruaha National Park is a large, remote protected area in south-central Tanzania notable for its wide-ranging savanna, riverine corridors and large populations of elephants and predators. It is recognized for its more solitary, wilderness-style safari experience compared with northern parks.

The park’s highlights include extensive game-viewing along river channels, large baobab trees and rocky kopjes that host roaming prides of lion, packs of African wild dog and sizeable elephant herds. Wildlife viewing often requires longer drives between viewpoints and a focus on riverine areas during the dry season.

The protected area was formed to conserve the Great Ruaha watershed and the surrounding wildlife and has expanded in management and infrastructure over recent decades to support tourism and conservation work. Traditional pastoralist and hunting landscapes gave way to the park’s current protected status.

Ruaha occupies rugged plateaus and river valleys in Tanzania’s southern-central highlands within Iringa Region and adjacent administrative areas. The park is remote by Tanzanian standards and typically accessed by long road transfers or by small aircraft to bush airstrips.

  • Best time for wildlife: Game viewing is usually best in the dry season from June to October when animals concentrate along rivers and remaining waterholes.

What to See #

  • Great Ruaha River: A perennial river that runs through the park and sustains concentrated wildlife during the dry months, serving as the park's primary water source.
  • Baobab-dotted plains and kopjes: Extensive baobab-studded plains and rocky outcrops that provide habitat diversity and scenic viewing points for wildlife photography.
