Kitulo National Park

Kitulo National Park is a protected area in southern Tanzania’s highlands, established in 2005 to conserve montane grassland ecosystems and their floral diversity. It covers high-elevation plateaus known for extensive wildflower displays and a high number of endemic plant species.

The park’s main attraction is seasonal floral displays across montane meadows and grasslands, including large numbers of orchids and other alpine species that bloom after rains. Trails and viewpoints across the plateau give access to the flower-rich areas at walking distance.

The park was created to protect these montane habitats from agricultural conversion and to support scientific study of the region’s specialized flora. Management focuses on habitat protection, research, and limited visitor access to minimise disturbance.

Kitulo sits in the Mbeya Region of southern Tanzania on high plateaus in the Southern Highlands; the landscape is upland grassland and heath interrupted by ridges and valley forests, with the nearest regional centres reached by rural roads.

• Flower season: Peak floral displays occur during the region’s wet season when upland meadows produce large carpets of orchids and other alpine flowers, attracting botanical visitors.
• Protection status: Designated a national park in 2005 to protect montane grasslands and unique flora; access typically requires travel on rural roads from Mbeya and surrounding towns.

• Plan your trip for the local flowering season after the rains (generally the months following the wet season) - check with the Mbeya regional park office for current peak‑bloom timing.
• Kitulo is reached by road from Mbeya; arrange transport and a local guide in advance because on‑site facilities are limited and navigation of the plateaus is easier with someone who knows the tracks.
• Birdwatching and endemic plants are what many visitors miss - get an early morning walk on the grasslands to see orchids and highland specialists before the sun warms the plateau.
