Royal Square (Plaça Reial) is a 19th-century neoclassical square in Barcelona’s Barri Gòtic, immediately adjacent to La Rambla. It is known for its palm trees, arcaded buildings and central fountain.

The square is lined with restaurants, cafés and terraces beneath covered arcades and contains ornate street lighting, including historic lamp posts associated with Antoni Gaudí. It is a compact, formal plaza that functions as both a tourist stop and a local nightlife area.

Constructed on the site of a former convent in the mid-19th century as part of urban redevelopment, the square has since been a focal point for public life in the Gothic Quarter. Architectural elements reflect the 19th-century rebuilding of this part of the old city.

The square sits just off La Rambla, a short walk from the Liceu metro station and other central Barcelona landmarks.

Plaça Reial (Royal Square) is in Barcelona’s Barri Gòtic off La Rambla. The nearest metro is L3 (Liceu); exit Liceu station and it’s a 1-2 minute walk to the square. It’s also an easy walk from many central bus stops along La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter.

• For the liveliest atmosphere and lit facades choose early evening, but if you want fewer crowds and better access to the arcades and terraces visit mid-morning on a weekday.
• Avoid the busiest entrance from La Rambla-approach the square via Carrer dels Arcs or the parallel side streets to find quieter restaurants and to better appreciate the square's Gaudí-designed lampposts and arcade details.
