Plaça Sant Jaume is the administrative heart of Barcelona in the Gothic Quarter, immediately recognizable as the location of both the regional government and the city hall. The square occupies the historic core of the city and functions as its principal civic space.

The square is flanked by two major government buildings - the Palau de la Generalitat and the Ajuntament de Barcelona - and is frequently the stage for public ceremonies, demonstrations and official receptions. Its compact paved space is a focal point for local political life and tourist routes through the Gothic Quarter.

Built on the site of the Roman forum, the square has served as Barcelona’s administrative centre since medieval times and evolved as the city’s political heart. Many of the surrounding buildings incorporate Gothic and later architectural elements from successive centuries.

Located in the Ciutat Vella (Old City) between La Rambla and Via Laietana, the square sits at the geographic and administrative centre of Barcelona.

Plaça Sant Jaume is in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. The closest metro stations are Liceu (L3) and Jaume I (L4); from Las Ramblas it’s a 2-5 minute walk down the narrow streets to the square.

• Arrive before mid-day to see municipal life: clerks, pigeons, and the changing of flags at the Palau de la Generalitat.
• Notice the iron lampposts and the tiny brass plaques on the paving-each offers a small architectural anecdote.
