La Boqueria (Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria) is Barcelona’s large public food market located on La Rambla in the Ciutat Vella district of Catalonia, Spain. It is one of the city’s principal fresh-food markets, with a dense concentration of stalls selling fruit, vegetables, seafood, meats, cheese and prepared foods.

The market comprises hundreds of vendors and small tapas counters and is used by both local residents and visitors for grocery shopping and casual dining. It traces its roots to a medieval open-air market and developed into the covered market complex visible today during the 19th century.

The market sits directly off La Rambla and is within walking distance of other central Barcelona landmarks, making it one of the most visited food markets in the city.

• Visiting tip: Best visited in the morning when the widest selection of fresh produce and seafood is available, and some stalls close earlier in the day or on Sundays.

La Boqueria (Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria) is directly on La Rambla in central Barcelona. The closest metro stop is Liceu on L3 (the green line) - the Liceu exit opens onto La Rambla adjacent to the market; Plaça de Catalunya (L1/L3) is a 5-10 minute walk north. Many city buses also run along La Rambla; driving is not recommended due to limited parking and pedestrianised areas.

• Arrive right at opening (early morning) to see the market at its freshest, sample produce from the stalls before peak tourist crowds appear, and get photos of the main aisles with fewer people.
• Skip the La Rambla entrance when possible and enter via the smaller side streets around the market to avoid the busiest throng and to find less tourist-focused stalls more easily.
• Many visitors stick to the tourist stalls; spend time at the inner counters and tapas bars (standing bars) inside the market for freshly carved jamón, seafood tapas and local Catalan products that locals favor.
• If you want a calmer experience, visit midweek rather than weekends and late afternoon just before closing when the pace eases and some vendors offer last-minute bargains.
