Rova of Antananarivo
Palace Historic royal palace complex overlooking Antananarivo
Perched on Antananarivo’s highest hill, the Rova is Madagascar’s royal palace complex with reconstructed wooden buildings and royal tombs. Tourists visit for history, architecture and panoramic views over the capital.
The Rova of Antananarivo is the historic royal complex that crowns the highest hill in Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo, and served as the political and ceremonial center of the Merina monarchy from the 17th to the 19th centuries. It is one of the most important cultural sites in Madagascar and contains palaces and royal tombs.
On the plateau visitors see timber and stone royal buildings, a cluster of royal tombs, and museum displays in an associated palace; the main palace terrace gives sweeping views across the city. The site footprint is compact but sits on a steep hilltop, so expect short climbs between buildings and viewpoints. Some buildings are under conservation and access can be limited depending on ongoing restoration.
The hill complex grew over centuries under Merina rulers and was the seat of successive kings and queens before French colonization. Many structures date to the 18th and 19th centuries; the site suffered a major fire in 1995 that destroyed significant parts of the complex and prompted phased rebuilding and archaeological work.
The Rova stands on the Analamanga hill within central Antananarivo, immediately above the city core and the Prime Minister’s area; it occupies the highest point of the capital and is reached by road and pedestrian paths from the central districts.
- Best viewpoint: Sits on the highest hill in Antananarivo and provides clear panoramic views over the city from the palace terrace.
- Restoration status: Major buildings were severely damaged in a 1995 fire and restoration work has proceeded in stages since the early 2000s, so some structures may be closed for conservation.
What to See #
- Manjakamiadana (Queen's Palace): The principal timber palace built on the site of the Rova; traditionally called the Queen's Palace and historically used as the main ceremonial residence of the Merina monarchy.
- Andafiavaratra Palace: A royal building below the main complex that now houses a museum collection of objects associated with the Merina court, including items rescued after the 1995 fire.
- Royal tombs: A cluster of family tombs and funerary enclosures for Merina kings and queens located within the hilltop complex; several tombs remain visible among the palace foundations.
