Rostra
Ruins Ancient Roman speakers' platform in the Forum
The speakers’ platform in Rome’s ancient forum, originally fitted with ship prows; tourists include history buffs visiting the Roman Forum, nearby Capitoline Hill and ruins that map republican and imperial civic life.
The Rostra was the speakers’ platform in the Roman Forum used for public oratory, political announcements and civic ceremonies in ancient Rome. Its name derives from the ship prows (rostra) that were mounted on the platform as trophies of naval victories.
As a central stage for public life in Republican and Imperial Rome, the Rostra was the site where magistrates, politicians and orators addressed assemblies and where official proclamations were made. Over centuries the structure was altered and rebuilt to suit changing ceremonial and architectural arrangements in the Forum.
Physical remains and archaeological traces mark the Rostra’s location within the Forum near other civic buildings; the surviving platform fragments and later Roman repairs reflect its long use and adaptation. Today it is studied as part of the broader Forum complex and interpreted for visitors to the archaeological site.
The Rostra sits within the Roman Forum in the heart of Rome, surrounded by the Curia, basilicas and temples that formed the civic and religious centre of ancient Rome.
- Function and decoration: The Rostra was the principal public speaking platform in the Roman Forum, decorated with the ship prows (rostra) taken as war trophies.
- Public role: It served as a focal point for political and civic speeches during the Roman Republic and Imperial periods and was rebuilt multiple times as the Forum evolved.
