Rongbuk Monastery

Rongbuk Monastery is a Buddhist monastery on the north side of Mount Everest in Tibet, located above the Rongbuk valley near the head of the Rongbuk Glacier. It is known as a spiritual and logistical stop for pilgrims and expeditions heading to the Everest north face and base camp.

The monastery complex includes a main gompa with prayer halls and traditional monastic buildings that serve residents and visitors. The site offers direct views toward the Everest massif when weather permits and has long been associated with Himalayan pilgrimage.

Rongbuk was established in the early 20th century and has been maintained by successive monastic communities, adapting over time to increased numbers of foreign climbers and tourists. It remains a focal point for local religious life and for visitors to the Everest region.

The monastery sits in Tibet Autonomous Region on the northern approaches to Mount Everest, above the Rongbuk valley and glacier and within the high-altitude landscape that leads to the Everest North Base Camp.
