Cho Oyu at a Glance#
About Cho Oyu#
Cho Oyu is an 8,188 metre mountain on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and is the sixth-highest peak in the world. It is widely regarded as among the more accessible of the world’s 8,000-metre mountains.
Climbers approach the mountain via established base camps and fixed-route lines on the main ridges; many expeditions use a northern (Tibetan) approach where logistics and road access are comparatively easier. The mountain sits close to major Sherpa and Tibetan trade routes and offers classic Himalayan high-altitude landscapes and views of neighbouring giants.
Cho Oyu was first climbed in 1954 by an international team led by Austrians and Sherpa climbers. Since then it has been a frequent objective for high-altitude teams because of its relatively moderate technical demands compared with other 8,000-metre peaks.
The peak lies on the Nepal-Tibet border in the Mahalangur Himal section of the Himalaya, roughly west of Mount Everest and accessible from approaches on either the Nepalese or Tibetan side.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is 8,188 metres, making it the sixth highest mountain on Earth and one of the more frequently climbed 8,000-metre peaks.
- Climbing status: Cho Oyu is considered one of the technically less difficult 8,000-metre peaks, which contributes to its popularity as an objective for high-altitude climbers.
What to See#
- North (Tibet) base camp: North (Tibetan) base camp sits at roughly 5,700 metres and is the common starting point for most standard ascent routes on the mountain.
- Southwest ridge: Southwest ridge is one of the main technical lines used by expedition teams and is approached from the Tibetan side for logistic ease.
- Nangpa La: Nangpa La pass lies nearby and has historically been an important trade and migration corridor between the Khumbu and Tibetan plateaus.
Tips for Visiting Cho Oyu#
- Best seasons for Cho Oyu are the pre‑monsoon (April-May) and post‑monsoon (September-October); weather is most stable then and expedition logistics are easier than in the monsoon or winter.
- Most commercial expeditions approach Cho Oyu from the Tibetan (north) side - organize permits and full logistics through a reputable operator licensed to operate in Tibet/China rather than attempting independent cross‑border access.
- Plan your acclimatization schedule and summit bids to favor early‑morning summit pushes (before daytime winds pick up); also be prepared for required Chinese/Tibetan climbing permits and fixed‑rope/porter arrangements often handled by your operator.
Best Time to Visit Cho Oyu#
Best visited in the main climbing windows of spring or autumn when weather is most stable for high-altitude mountaineering; expect very cold conditions at altitude.
