Roda Island (Rhoda) is an island in the Nile River within central Cairo, historically important and long associated with medieval and earlier urban development. The island’s most famous surviving monument is the Nilometer, a device used historically to measure the Nile’s flood level.

The Nilometer on the island is a stone-lined well with a descending stairway and measuring column; the surviving structure on Roda dates to the 9th century CE and replaced earlier measuring installations at the site. The island sits within central Cairo and is connected to the surrounding city by bridges and causeways.

Today Roda Island is part of the riverine urban fabric of Cairo and is visible from the central Corniche and nearby historic districts.

  • Historic Nilometer: The historic Nilometer on the island dates to the 9th century CE and was used for centuries to measure the Nile's flood level and assess tax and agricultural planning.

How to Get to Roda Island #

Roda Island (Gezira/Zamalek area of Cairo) sits in the Nile within central Cairo and is reached by road from the city center. Take a taxi or ride-hailing service from downtown Cairo or from Tahrir Square; bridges link the island to both riverbanks. There is no direct Cairo Metro station on the island, so most visitors arrive by taxi/bus and then walk or take a short local cab to specific sites on the island.

Tips for Visiting Roda Island #

  • Approach Roda Island from the downtown Cairo side (near the Qasr el-Nil area) for the easiest pedestrian access and best views of the historic Nilometer at the island's southern tip.
  • Visit early in the day to avoid peak Nile-side traffic and to get unobstructed views of the river and the small historic structures on the island before tour groups arrive.
  • Combine a short island walk with nearby central Cairo sights (the Corniche and adjacent neighborhoods) rather than treating it as a long standalone excursion-the island is compact and best seen alongside other downtown stops.
