Rinpung Dzong is a major fortress-monastery in Paro town, Bhutan, built in the mid-17th century and serving both religious and administrative roles. It is a central landmark in Paro and a venue for local festivals and ceremonies.
The dzong comprises layered courtyards, temples and assembly halls, and it functions as the district administrative seat as well as a monastic residence. The site hosts the annual Paro Tshechu, a major religious festival featuring masked dances and large public gatherings.
Construction dates to the 1640s under the direction of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal; the structure has been repaired and maintained over centuries while preserving the traditional dzong layout and decoration.
Situated within Paro town in the Paro valley, the dzong overlooks the town and is adjacent to the Ta Dzong watchtower and museum, forming a compact cultural precinct accessible on foot.

How to Get to Rinpung Dzong #
Rinpung Dzong is located in Paro town on the Paro Dzong complex beside the main street. From Paro Airport it’s a short drive (around 15-30 minutes depending on traffic) into town; from Paro town centre the dzong is a few minutes’ walk from the main road and local bus/taxi stops.
Most visitors arrive by road from Thimphu or by flight into Paro and then walk or take a short taxi ride to the dzong.
Tips for Visiting Rinpung Dzong #
- Approach Rinpung Dzong from the pedestrian bridge by Paro town for the classic views and to avoid vehicle congestion; morning visits are usually less busy than midday when tour groups arrive.
- If you want to experience Paro Tsechu (the festival) arrive several days early to secure a good vantage point-outside festival times the dzong is much quieter and easier to photograph.
- Ask at the visitor desk about accessing the inner chapels and the small dzong museum-many visitors only see exterior courtyards and miss the intricate woodwork and paintings inside.

Rinpung Dzong in Paro is best seen during spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) when weather is most favorable and views are clear.
