Rincón de la Vieja Volcano

Rincón de la Vieja is a complex volcano in northwestern Costa Rica noted for volcanic geothermal features, hot springs and rugged volcanic terrain. It forms the centrepiece of a national park with varied trails, waterfalls and thermal areas.

Visitors can follow boardwalked circuits through steaming fumarole fields and see bubbling mud pots, or choose longer hikes that reach higher elevations and waterfalls on the volcano’s flanks. The park combines volcanic features with dry and wet forest zones, and the presence of geothermal springs has supported several nearby hot-spring resorts.

The volcanic complex has produced eruptions in the modern era and remains monitored for activity; ranger information and posted warnings should be consulted before attempting summit routes. The volcano lies in the northwestern volcanic ranges of Costa Rica and is commonly accessed from the regional town of Liberia and surrounding Guanacaste-area gateways.
